Comments: La Jolla – Home to the Brown Pelican. The first few weeks in January is a great time to visit La Jolla to photograph the brown pelicans. Week days are better than weekends to visit the cove due to high traffic of tourists and photographers. From past experiences, a good time to photographs the pelicans is from 8:00 to 10:00 am but try to get there earlier to get parking adjacent to the cove. You be surprise how close one can get to the pelicans. In the past, I’ve used my 80 to 200 mm zoom but to catch the pelicans in flight, I use my 80 to 400 mm zoom lens. The other equipment you will need is your tripod and Polarizer filter. After you are done photographing the pelicans, drive further down the road toward the oceans and you might get great shots of the seals. Check weather conditions for the day you plan to visit. Blue skies are better than overcast days and fog can ruin your day.

Directions: Take 5 toward San Diego. Exist La Jolla Village Drive (right). Left at Torrey Pines Road. Right at Prospect Street. Look for sign “COVE”, turn right (One Way street). Approx. 100 to 150 feet ahead, a small parking area on right side. At the parking lot, a sign will direct you to the Pelicans.
